At the farm we are very proud to announce (a deadly sin?!) that not only were we nominated, but we have been shortlisted as a “Rising Sustainability Star” by Speciality & Fine Food Fair Awards 2021. The award, sponsored by Creating Nature’s Corridors is presented to an individual or business that upholds sustainable values across all aspects of their work, has led an inspiring sustainable initiative or project that’s driven positive change within their business and/or community.

The nomination says “Cilgwenyn Bee Farm have a holistic approach to business. They have transformed a disused coal mine into a brand-new bee farm offering carbon neutral honey. A number of initiatives have been implemented on the farm from creating their own electricity through solar power, to planting enough trees on the land to offset 30 years of production of jars and lids. They also give back to their community by training veterans for free to help combat PTSD. Their nominator said, "They made me realise for the first time the dangers that climate change posed, they have influenced me a lot and I know a fair number of people who look up to them for inspiration."

To think that someone has gone out of their way to nominate us for this award is truly a nice surprise. What we have done and continue to do here is done because we think it is right. For us to inspire others is rewarding in its own right. If we can raise the profile of what is going on in the world as we see it (rightly or wrongly) that’s great. If we can inspire people to change that’s great. If we can give people and more importantly consumers a CHOICE in how buying goods can help them make changes then that’s great.

The Speciality & Fine Food Fair Awards have been created to recognise and celebrate the individuals and businesses driving innovation and delighting their customers in the fine food & drink community. The Speciality & Fine Food Fair Awards champion all that make our industry such a remarkable and inspiring place.

The judges for the award include John Ferrand, Abby Chicken, Adrian Boswell, Scott Winston, Karen Green, Vhari Russell and Rob Copley, seasoned experts in their fields and are well known in the speciality food industry. But the decision is not theirs alone. After their shortlist it is now down to the public vote.
