Absolutely chuffed - Great Taste Awards winners!
9 August 2024
We are thrilled here at Cilgwenyn to be able to say we have done it AGAIN. Last week we have been named among the top food and drink producers globally this year, picking up 3 highly prized 2-star Great Taste award for our Carmarthenshire Meadow Wildflower Honey, Cardigan Bay Coastal Wildflower Honey and Brecon Beacons Uplands Wildflower Honey.
Judged by the Guild of Fine Food’s expert panel, 13,672 products were put through the competition’s rigorous blind judging process in the world’s most trusted food and drink accreditation scheme and three of our products managed to be one of 1,386 recipients that achieved the 2-star accreditation of “above and beyond delicious”, in a competition that not only attracts artisan products but also supermarket and renowned household brands.
The Judges commented on our Carmarthenshire Meadow Wildflower Honey:
“This honey has an excellent viscosity and a vibrant aroma rich with herbal and floral notes. The flavour is robust and complex, rich with the floral notes but enhanced with the citrus and pine notes which sing of the environment these hardworking bees have been working - sweet, smooth and well balanced honey”
“This is a deep honey with a good gloss and viscosity. The aroma has gentle woody and herbal notes, which follow through into the taste, combined with caramel vanilla and a light citrus freshness. Delicately flavoured, and very well balanced, this is a complex delightful honey.”
“This honey has a very appealing amber colour. The subtle meadow notes on the palate have a pleasing long finish allowing notes to develop and linger. The citrus and pine were evident.”
For our Brecon Beacons Uplands Wildflower Honey the Judges commented:
“This is a golden honey with a caramel consistency and bright bouquet of aromas. It has a wonderfully rounded flavour, which zings in the mouth. That flavour develops pleasantly, including notes of toffee, caramel and flowers. This is a product is quite delightful as it is. Very well done.”
“This is a lovely honey, with an amber colour and silky, easy-pouring consistency. It is gentle - mellow is the right word - with delicate floral notes and a slightly bracing finish, which might indicate the hawthorn.”
“This is glossy and bronze with good viscosity and a deep and sultry aroma. It has a bosky flavour, balanced and reasonably complex. We get caramel and honeycomb but with a little fruit in the background. Very long and interesting flavour.”
On the Cardigan Bay Coastal Wildflower Honey the Judges commented:
“This is a rich-looking honey with excellent viscosity and an enticing bouquet. A divine smooth texture releases a subtle but intense flavour profile suggesting the environment these bees have been working – floral, fruit and herbal notes working in harmony to give a really stunning flavour which keeps you wanting more as it just keeps on giving sweet, complex, nectar notes.”
“This is a smooth, gentle, rounded honey which tastes as good as it looks. It is a lovely amber colour, smooth as silk on the palate. The finish is long without either a catch in the throat or excessive sweetness. It is nuanced and subtle, with light florality and some delicate mineral notes.”
“This is a golden, glowing honey that rolls enticingly in the jar. The floral, slightly savoury aroma compels tasting. The flavour itself is exciting, with punches of herbs and flowers and real vibrancy of texture. It's especially zingy, with a small amount going a very long way. A lingering aftertaste.”
We are pleased that the bees have managed to keep the high quality of the honey high, and a true reflection of the environment in which they live in. Since 2016 we have amassed an impressive 19 Great Taste Stars and we are pleased that the honey that our bees produce is consistently award winning.
